For the past 18 months, Myspace has desperately tried to reinvent itself. With a relaunch into ‘social entertainment’ Myspace is trying not to become the AskJeeves of social networking. And the next venture for Myspace is into television. When I heard about Myspace TV I immediately went to Youtube to see if there are any videos or reviews of the concept. It is shocking to see how there was not only nothing about Myspace TV, there was almost nothing about Myspace. The official Youtube channel of Myspace only has a few videos and the latest one was produced 8 months ago! This is a company that is attempting to be the center of social entertainment and it doesn’t even have Youtube videos! Wow, that doesn’t look good. But maybe Myspace TV will blow my mind…lets see what it actually does.
Myspace TV is launching this spring and will allow you to watch television shows (no indication of what shows that is) on your computer, tablet, phone, and Panasonic TVs. The attempt is to create a more social experience while watching television. Imagine live message boards discussing TV shows as they happen, or groups of friends ‘poking’ friends to tell them to go check out this TV show they are watching. All very interesting in theory, but without a list of programs or real details about how the user experience will work it is difficult to say if this will be a game changer or just another failed attempt to rebrand itself.
